Rick Santorum was declared (finally) winner of the 2012 Iowa Caucuses...they think (Image courtesy The Des Moines Register)
This feels like one of those weeks where no particular news item or topic of conversation sticks out. It might have been the snow storm on Friday, but it didn’t amount to inches and inches of snow. The first week of classes seemed pretty routine, with the campus once again buzzing with people and activity. The 2012 Iowa Caucuses did manage to make the news again. You thought they were over once Mitt Romney was declared the winner on caucus night/morning? Think again! If you go ahead and flip the winner and second place finisher, you get back into the headlines, with Rick Santorum declared winner 34 votes. The certification still left Jon Hunstman in the lead over my write-in campaign, so I’ve conceded that to him. We’ll talk about the caucus blunders and current state of the race. We’ll also talk about a cat stuck in a tree in Iowa City that garnered lots of attention, and, if we have time, check in to see how Occupy Iowa City is doing in this cold weather and snow. Join us for that and more, 1-2 p.m. tomorrow. Thanks for listening!

Well, you knew it had to happen eventually. The fake winter we’ve had in Iowa had to actually start looking and feeling like real winter. Even though I was telling people that we were somehow going to miraculously bypass the season this year, even I knew it wasn’t true. We were cruising along with 50 degree days and BAM!Five inches of snow and howling cold temps on Thursday. The snow has definitely led to some accidents. You know what else leads to accidents? People running red lights. Maybe people will do that less or at least get held accountable for it soon, with the possible implementation of red-light cameras, which passed a first vote by the Iowa City City Council this week. We’ll talk about that, as well as talk about the start of the semester. And Corey will tell us if winter is here to stay. Hey, maybe it’s only going to last for a week? I can dream, right? Catch you tomorrow, 1-2 p.m., and thanks for listening!

Attention has been focused on Iowa recently, and I’ve been told it’s actually not because people were excited to see how our show was going to kick off the new year last weekend. Or at least that wasn’t the only reason. The Iowa Caucuses were Tuesday, and as predicted both on this website and in our show last Sunday, the first contest of the republican presidential nomination process came down to three men: Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, and Mitt Romney. Romney’s 8-vote victory was so close, that if my failed write-in campaign to try and beat Jon Huntsman had worked the election would have been swung toward Santorum probably. Oh well. The race moves on to New Hampshire, but we’ll recap the Iowa Caucuses, and the awesomeness that was late-night cable news, still covering the whole thing late into the night and morning without a winner. We’ll also talk about the Iowa City (or should I say “Police State City”) Council taking up the issue of red-light cameras again and more. Join us, 1-2 p.m. on 89.7 FM KRUI, and thanks for listening!

Happy New Year! There’s so much news and things to discuss, we decided to do a show on the holiday. Corey and Matt are excited to talk about the Iowa Caucuses, the first-in-the-nation voting in the 2012 presidential election that take place on Tuesday. It looks to be a toss up between Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and maybe even Rick Santorum. Also, I’ve been waging an underg round write-in campaign that I’m hoping will have me finish above Jon Huntsman. Shouldn’t be too difficult. We’ll also talk about at least one year-in-review list, probably the Press-Citizen’s list of top news stories in Iowa City. Not sure if the Daily Iowan put out a list, but I’m sure this photo gallery would be at the top. Catch us for at least an hour, from 1-2 p.m., and maybe even a second hour, because we’ve definitely got enough to talk about! Thanks for listening!

The first show after finals week and the beginning of Winter Break can be difficult to fill. There’s not always stuff to talk about with most students leaving town. For this reason, I would like to thank UI Journalism Professor Stephen Bloom. His article featured on The Atlantic’s website has, as the Associated Press puts it, “painted Iowans as uneducated Jesus freaks who love hunting and don’t deserve the political clout they will exercise Jan. 3.” The reaction to the article has been swift, pointed and voluminous, including a very well thought out and well written essay from UI President Sally Mason. We’ll have plenty to say about Bloom’s article and the reaction to it. Honestly, I haven’t been this excited to hear what our cohosts think about a topic for a long time. Hopefully by showtime, I’ll have thawed out from my Salvation Army bell ringing experience this afternoon. It was cold in the shade for two hours, I swear! And we’ll put Corey on the spot for his Christmas forecast. Join us, 1-2 p.m. tomorrow, and thanks for listening!
